IMHO Mar Vista is OK, there are other areas I'd rather live if I'm going to spend that much money. I think it's pricey.

By LA standards, it's not that pricey. , and pretty safe for the most part (except for the southwestern part which borders Culver City and Marina Del Rey, by the projects - that area is far worse than anywhere else in either MV or Culver)

Mar Vista is one of the last real middle class neighborhoods within LA city limits. It's one of the last parts of the west side that reminds me of the west side I grew up in. I highly recommend it with only one caveat - it is in LAUSD territory so if you have kids you're better off in Culver City or Santa Monica both of which are NOT LAUSD.

Mar Vista has one of 23 public housing/section 8 projects of the L.A. Housing Authority.

Here's their website: http://www.211la.com/find/source/housingpublic.htm (broken link)

Looks like I could have qualified, given my low income!

I was surprised to find that Woodland Hills has a public housing project - but it's for seniors and disabled only. That's a very safe area to live in; perhaps Mar Vista is the same (even though their public housing project is for anyone who qualifies).

The "Mar Vista Gardens" projects are actually on the border between Mar Vista, Culver City, and Marina del Rey - "Del Rey" is actually the name for that (largely industrial) area. Suffice to say it's one of the least nice parts of the west side and far worse than anywhere else in any of the communities I mentioned. In MV, the closer you get to West L.A. or Santa Monica (as opposed to Venice or Marina del Rey) the nicer it is.

People are under the misconception that the projects are in Culver City, that's why.

Mar Vista is very nice, but it's still in LAUSD, which is just an embarrassment.

I know a family with small kids that's taking the high road out of there. Venice High school is the closest highschool to them; a kid was shot and killed there last year.....what a wonderful environment for learning.

That sums up LA in a nutshell...nice areas that get dragged down by everything else.

John23: When was the shooting?

EDIT: http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?se...cal&id=4240388

Augustine Contreras died when he intervened in a fight between his brother and a group of men. This was outside VHS.

The brothers lived in Culver City: http://www.latimes.com/broadband/wif/la-0610weekinphotos-pg,0,7701288.photogallery?coll=la-headlines-wif&index=6 (broken link)
