Well I guess you can always move out here unprepared and do porn if you run low on cash. You wouldn't be the first.

If it is that serious, make the move.Try finding a roomate before you get here on perhaps craigslist.I have been in S.Cal for a few months and seem to think its a lot of jobs here.HTH stay safe.

I say to just do it! My husband and I moved out here on a lot less and did just fine. Make sure to have a few good roomate prospects lined up before arriving, because staying in a hotel will drain your wallet very quickly. You shouldn't have any problems finding a roomate here.

As for a job, think about temping at a movie studio. Every major studio (MGM, Sony, etc.) uses temp agencies for office workers, and your receptionist experience will come in very handy. I have temped as a receptionist at several of the studios, and getting full access to the lot at lunch time was so much fun! You will also get to meet a lot of people. I don't know how much luck you will have starting an acting career here ( just being realistic), but there are many other things you can do in the ent. industry - just try things out and find your niche.

My husband and I have moved here from across the country twice and are now here to stay. I seriously think you will be fine with $7000. Just keep in mind that the temp agencies pay about $13 an hour, so you will want to make sure you find a housing situation that you can afford. Also, the jobs can come and go, so just be very careful with your savings. Hit the road and good luck!!

Default Why not?

I borrowed gas money to get here and within a month all was well. You can't turn around here without bumping into money. Just get your head straight and your ass will follow.

What is so wrong with Boston? I love that city. Where do you live and work in Boston?

What makes you think you are going to like LA better?

Default Hi there

I just read your post. I'm in Boston, too and I'm currently in the process of
moving to L.A. I'm looking for a job right now and I hope I'll find one soon.
I'm ready to get out of Boston.

What has happened to Boston that all you folks want to leave? I left Maine in 1998 and moved to south OC. I retired, sold our house, and purchased two condos. In 1998, it was much easier to do that. I rent one, and we live in the other. If we didn't own our real estate outright, I seriously doubt if we could afford to live here.

We loved Boston, and frequently drove from Portland to the Hub just to hang out, eat at the great restautants, go to a Sox , Patriots, or Celtics game, or to a drum corps competition.

I'm also old enough to remember when the very beautiful goverment center areas was Scolly Square, just another part of Washington Street and the Combat Zone.

Here in California you will miss the great New England food. Boston has better Chinese food, Italian food, and most definitely seafood. The pizza here is pedestrian, but you will enjoy the lovely winters and the access to the beautful west.

We wouldn't move back to New England for anything.

To the OP, please note that California's unemployment rate is climbing. It's 7.7% now, and in reality, it's probably over 8% since the official numbers don't include anyone who had stopped looking. The unemployment rate in Los Angeles is 8.3% according to this L.A. Times article:

http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-fi-caljobs20-2008sep20,0,4122020.story (broken link)

Don't assume that it's going to be so easy to find a decent paying job (decent meaning that you'll be able to afford the rent here, which is still astronomical for a good area, even with roommates!).

I always recommend that you have enough money saved to move out of L.A. as well as to move in. There's nothing worse than being trapped in a city that you can't afford to live in!

I'm sorry about your ex-boyfriend, but isn't there somewhere else you can go, and continue to save more money before you drive across the country?

Best of luck to you, but believe me, it's not that easy to make it work out here. Wages are low and costs are high.
