Single mom going to USC...where to live?
I have recently been accepted to USC's School of Cinematic Arts. My 8-year-old son and I will be moving from a small town in Washington State in January and I don't know ANYONE in the LA area. I really need a short commute (is 30-45 minutes with traffic completely unrealistic?), because I will have to be around in the morning to take my son to school, get myself to class, and then be back to pick him up in the afternoon.
My main concerns, besides the commute, are finding a good elementary school and a safe neighborhood. Unfortunately, I cannot visit the area beforehand to check out the schools in person or test out the commutes. I have been looking at the Silver Lake and South Pasadena areas, but I'm having a difficult time figuring out how long I'd actually be stuck in traffic.
I would love to be able to rely on public transportation, but only if it would be faster, or at the very least, the same amount of time as driving myself.
Can anyone who is familiar with the schools and commute please offer any information/suggestions on these two areas? Any suggestions of other places to live?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Are you looking to buy or rent and what is your budget???
It is hard for everyone to recommend somewhere to live, especially an area with good schools, when a budget isn't known.

Use this map to help with schools: California School Performance Maps
Schools that are blue (rank 10) are best and schools that are red (rank1) are generally bad.
8/10 or higher is a good school, 7/10 is a decent, 6/10 is average, below that is bad.

my advice would be to look at areas at either end of the 110 freeway, like san pedro or palos verdes to the south or south pasadena or pasadena proper to the north.

Mt. Washington Elementary is great and Mt. Washington is very close to Downtown...and Ivanhoe is sensational if you can find a place in the surrounding Silverlake neighborhood. South Pasadena has great schools and is still in the realm of possibility.
