that is a very nice area near the grove (mall) and pan pacific park that you had mentioned. palazzo apartments are known to be expensive and i've heard filled with industry types. anyways, there are many, many shopping and dining options in the area, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. my favorite part about that area is the farmer's market at the corner of 3rd and fairfax. they have a little stand that sells brazillian bbq and it is VERY good! anyways, the area is not the most upscale in the city, but it is certainly very trendy.

i echo the above with one caveat: it's very congested, high-density living around there. if that isn't to your liking, look a little farther west along 3rd, across fairfax.

This sounds like the Palazzo West. I've stayed in the Palazzo East which is round the corner. It was a slightly weird experience. Full of young things trying to break into Hollywood--even more than usual in west L.A. Lots of boastful talk about who was reading and auditioning for what etc. Somebody told me that at some point in the year the place fills up with child actors and their parents. Maybe the Palazzo West is different, with more long-term leases. I don't know.
The park isn't that great. The mall is The Grove, a fantastic concoction by Rick Caruso. The farmers' market next door is a good place to pick up a cheap lunch. LACMA is down the road. Wilshire Ave has good bus service if you don't have a car.
Personally I wouldn't live in that area forever. It feels a little rootless and unreal, partly because of the Grove and partly because it looks so unlike the rest of L.A. But it's a fine place to spend a few months, and it's certainly not dangerous.
