Need Advice on School in LA Area
We are moving to LA from NY and have young children. I am taking a job in Universal City. I need to live close to work and would like to send them to public schools. Any advice on where to look?

Looking for a house? Renting? Buying? Price Range?

I agree if it is the price range. Good schools in Burbank for the LA area.

For good public schools with a reasonable commute to Universal City try 1) South Pasadena, 2) Burbank, 3) La Crescenta, 4) La Canada-Flintridge and/or 5) San Marino. Commute rank would be 2, 3&4 tie, 1, 5. School rank would be 5, 4, 1, 2, 3. Affordability rank would be 3, 2, 1, 4, 5. My choice would be 1, 5, 4, 2, 3.

Unless you're in Woodland Hills / West Hills, stay far, far away from LAUSD.
I'd choose Burbank for a heap of reasons, but I'm biased...
Here's a handy site put together by the LA Times:

Burbank is very nice - good schools, great downtown.

Add to that - great mass transit access, JOBS, relatively affordable, walkable, excellent services (police, fire, libraries, parks, rec centers), "neighborhood" atmosphere, folks walking their dogs/biking/etc.
Did I mention I'm biased

No problem with the bias CLA. All of that can be also said about South Pas. One of the great things about living in a small city is that if you call city hall you can actually talk to somebody and get an answer. After one of the past wind storms (when were those?) I called about tree limbs in our street. That afternoon a city crew was out cleaning up the mess.

I'll admit longing for South Pas, but it lacks the affordability...
