It depends on who they are and how much money they have...
Lets see, I have been inside the house of one of the band members of Hootie And The Blowfish and this house was in Walnut Ca in the hills about 5 min from Mt Sac. From what I was told he sold the house and moved a better/bigger home in L.A.
Then I have been to the home of the black guy (don't know his name) who played in Saving Private Ryan. He lives in a simple home ( BUT NICE) in Pacific Palisades ; once again on top of a hill...lol
Lastly, I met a well known jazz musician who had a nice home tucked away in a hilly area in Brea, Ca.

Lee Van Cleef lived in Oxnard after his retirement.
Someone else on the board once mentioned some other has been retirees who lived in Oxnard.
In Lydon's case, as I explained, I think it had to do with marital issues. A man living in Venice is going to be far more likely to cheat on his wife than one living in Oxnard, not that Oxnard is devoid of good looking women - it just has fewer than Venice.

Less temptation for a middle aged guy to cheat on his wife in Oxnard.)
The number of celebs in Venice is relatively high even if lower than let's say Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, or the Hollywood Hills. Elijah Wood, Kirsten Dunst, Nicolas Cage, Jackson Browne (who's lived there since before it became fashionable),Dennis Hopper (who's lived there since LONG before it became fashionable), Eddie Van Halen, Perry Farrell, Kevin Shields, Ian Brown, John Leguizamo...the list goes on. You'd HAVE to be a big star to afford to live near Ocean Front Walk further south....
In Los Feliz, L.A.'s ORIGINAL celebrity neighborhood.

I wonder why some celebs choose one place over another, when they could afford to live anywhere.
-I guess some want to be in an area down to earth, they want to blend in with normal folks. Thus Venice, or lower Santa Monica (south of montana or wilshire). Or out of state....i.e, Demi Moore in Idaho.
To me, Holmby Hills or Bel Air would be too rigid and formal for a young star or couple under 35 or 40. That's where you go in your 50's or 60's.
In Santa Monica, I've heard of Tobey McGuire, Christina Ricci, Sean Astin, Owen Wilson.
Does Schwartzenegger still live in Brentwood? Off of Sunset. Or Palisades.

Schwartzenegger and his family were visiting Ojai and the Santa Barbara area looking at homes not to long ago, looking for the ultimate retirement enclave I guess. Both Ojai and Santa Barbara area are also places where stars seem to flock to. Up in Montacito (Spelling) near Santa Barbara Oprah has a little place, Kevin Costner also has a nice place, Kevin grew up in Ventura and went to Buena High School in Ventura. He stops by during the year to watch the High School Basket Ball and Football from time to time. Can you guess which of the Friends stars lives in Santa Barbara? His dad also is an actor and he lives in Ojai. (For the uneducated, its Oh Hi.) On a side note, Will Smith who lives in the Thousand Oaks area at Sherwood Country Club I think, wanted to see his son who plays football for Oaks Christian. The game was in Ventura. One of Will's people called us to ask if he could use our Helipad. What am I going to say, NO? Very nice guy. His helicopter dropped him off, they had a car waiting for him and when he was done, they brought him back to fly out again. Very cool lifestyle if you ask me. This is one class act guy. Very much into his family.

Reason: The topic isn't the racial makeup of Beverly Hills -- thanks.

A lot of musicians from mid-level touring bands bought houses in Santa Clarita/Newhall/Castaic and even the Antelope Valley when large houses were more affordable. Zakk Wylde, James Lomenzo, Carmine Appice, Rikki Rockett etc. A few more also relocated to Phoenix.
I think Scott Weiland and Chyna the transgendered wrestler live in Burbank.
In the early 1990's I saw Kathy Baker (Picket Fences) waiting out front of nice house in Glendale while walking early in the morning.

Truth is, unless someone is a super star for years and years, it's a fairly bourgeois existence. Once one is effectively retired living off royalties and investments, (aka washed out) it's essentially an upper middle to lower upper class life.
