Life in LA
Hi I'm a 16 year old prospective USC student from Phoenix, AZ and I'd like to know a little bit about the negatives of living in LA. I'm already familiar with the positives, weather, proximity to the beach, dining and cultural opportunities, skiing opportunities in winter, etc., but I'd like to delve into the negatives. There are two things in particular that I'd like to talk about, the traffic and the smog. How bad are these two aspects of the city? Say I wanted to get from the USC campus to Manhattan Beach, by car, at about 8am in the morning on a Saturday driving south on the I-110 and then west on the I-105, how long would it take me? I went on google maps to see how long it would take without traffic and it said about 25 minutes but whenever I've mapquested something in Phoenix it's always about 10 minutes off, so I can't imagine how off it is in LA. Also is the air quality really that bad, and which months are the worst and are the months that aren't the worst that bad?
tHaNkS!!!!!!

Google Maps has a great feature that gives you the "up to" time during traffic.
From what I've seen, the smog is worse inland; in the month that I've lived in West Hollywood we've had mostly blue skies (when it isn't cloudy/foggy), but when I've visited Glendale/Pasadena there's more smog.

Your only 16! How could you possibly travel by car? I'm guessing your parent's are chaperoning?

Uh, you know 16 is legal to drive right? And by the time he starts at USC, he'll be 18 anyway.

IN SUMMARY:
The Air: Bad but not enough to keep you from moving, living there. Near beach=air better Between eastern LA area and Inland Empire=the worst smot
The Traffic: Pretty much at the limit of what a sane human could put up with. However, you can indeed get to where you need to go in your auto, often in an even remotely decent amount of time. If there is an accident/incident that causes a jam (happens to average LA driver at least 1/mo.), road could be like a parking lot for an hour or more (really sucks unless you have tint windows, TV, and road head service).

Yes with an adult however. The OP made it seem as if he/she was going by themselves.
