Here is something that might help... maybe....

If you can get off the Orange County metrolink at Norwalk, and ride a bike over to the Green Line (also in Norwalk), it will take you over to Hawthorne and that area. Maybe a bike ride from your work at that point? Depending on how close that takes you, to where you need to be.

I don't know. At any rate, it's a creative possibility...

I understand I have a degree that should have me working in social services, yet I'm doing customer service. That said, if you really are making enough money to justify the commutes, I suggest Orange County. The Irvine/Anaheim area would be mid-way for both of you and is a very nice area.
