Default Hollywood / Echo Park - good areas for a 21yr old?

Hi everyone.

I plan on moving to LA in august 09 for college ( radiology ). I plan to have alot of money saved up then until for the move. I've looked on many apt listing sites, and I see that hollywood / echo park has the best apt prices in the area close to my school. so i have a few questions...

how safe is hollywood and echo park? ( those apt prices make me wonder)

how bad is the traffic? The school is near the 'Los Angeles County Medical Center' and i would be driving there every morning Mon through Fri.

how is the nightlife and when do stores usually close?

Its roughly ~5 miles on the 101/10. Traffic sucks but you won't be sitting in it for that long.

That area varies by neighborhood. From a quiet street to broken glass everywhere.
