CSU Los Angeles
Is CSULA really that bad? I read a lot of posts here saying it is the worst CSU. What is so bad about it? I saw in US news & world report's college issue that the students at CSULA have better test scores than, say, Dominguez Hills. Is it in a decent neighborhood?

Cal State LA is a big commuter school. Its in eastern LA like at the edge of the SGV.
Its not most people's first choice.
I have a couple of friends that go to CSUDH, and they seem to like it enough.
Those schools, along with CSU Northridge, arent very competitive at all to get accepted into. But out of those 3, Northridge seems to be the best.
But I'm sure with any of those, you can get a good education. You'll get what you make of it.

Cal State Dominguez and LA are both kind of on the low end, at least in physical appearances. I've been a contractor at both schools and they are pretty run down. I'm not so sure of the academics, I personally think that education is what you make of it. I read a study somewhere that talked about the various ivy league schools and how the education there isn't that much better than at a standard school. I suppose it may look better on a resume though???
It needs to be weighed against the costs and what field you're pursuing.

If you're gonna go to CSULA might as well just go to CC and then transfer to a UC.

True, or to a better CSU. The best way to save money and possibly time is to go community colleges to get the general ed out of the way, and then after 4 semesers transfer to university to finish the major. At 20 bucks a unit, its a great deal.
The only reason I can see people going straight to a 4 year university, is because they want the college experience, the college life. Cal State LA doesnt really got it, from what I hear.

Which CSU's are the better ones? Besides being a commuter school what makes Cal State LA so bad? What is the part of town that it's in like?

My thoughts on CSULA
= Old decrepited buildings, feeling uneasy if its earthquake proof.
= Rooms don't look to shabby
= Alot of Hippies instructors
= Have you ever heard of the "Bell Curve" in their grading system
= Eeeek minorities, *gives wallet*
other than that is alright.

I guess it depends on your major.
I dont know what the best CSU's are, but the most competitive CSU in the LA area seems to be CSU Long Beach.
Outside of LA, CSU Fullerton and SDSU seem to be pretty popular.
Cal State LA is close to East LA...Boyle Heights and City Terrace are south of it..and a bit east is the SGV(Alhambra, Monterrey Park, etc).
But I'd guess its what you make of it. I'm sure you can still get an education there. You might have better access to professors than you would at the more popular schools. Theres a lot of university rating websites out there with reviews. Look into it.

We don't call it Cal State Ghetto for nothing. It's in a decent enough area, but the school itself? BIG Thumbs down. The quality of the education sucks. But the good news is they'll give anyone a degree. My ex can't spell for crap, barely went to class (dropped out of half, barely passed the other half) and got a degree. So if you don't feel like working hard, I guess it's a great school, but everyome in the LA area knows that the school's education lacks quality.

I recommend Cal Poly, Pomona or Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo...
