My students, my neighbors, my close friends, all Persian Jews.
If you saw my original post, I did mention that Palms has a sizeable South Asian population, and so presumably some of the worshippers there at the Shia mosque are from India and Pakistan. I do believe that the majority of worshippers there are Persians.

There's no such thing as an Assyrian Muslim. Assyrians are Iraqi Christians. You'd mean an Iraqi Shiite.

Considering that L.A. County has only two Shia mosques (the other one is in Artesia) and plenty of Sunni mosques, and given tensions between the two major branches of Islam (fortunately they have not flared up in L.A.), I doubt you'd find any Sunnis going to a Shia mosque. Particularly considering the massive King Fahd Mosque is close by in Culver City.

If there are any L.A. Muslims on CityData they could probably state more about this.

I'm glad I found this thread, because we need more threads about diversity in L.A.

BTW, are there a lot of interracial couples in L.A.? We haven't talked about that in like a day or two.

Forgetting about Santa Monica, Westwood, Brentwood, West L.A., or Mar Vista? Or the more working class Persians in Palms? Obviously not all of them are Jewish. I do agree that the percentage of Jews amongst L.A.'s Persian population is much greater than the percentage of Jews in Iran's total population.

It's safe to say that the majority of Persians in South Robertson are Jewish....

Well the diversity is one of the coolest things about the town. I love not being in the overwhelming majority (I'm a white boy from the south) -- We've had a good run. I'm looking forward to learning Armenian as well as Spanish.

I must admit, that as a born and raised Los Angelino, Ive never heard of Palms until recently. We've always just referred to that area as Los Angeles. This is what I found on Palms:

Per the United States Census of 2000, Palms (including Westside Village) had a population of 40,293. Racial and ethnic breakdown was as follows: 48.1% white or Caucasian, 11.9% black or African-American, 0.7% American Indian or Alaska native, 21.6% Asian or Pacific Islander, 11.7% some other race, and 6.1% two or more races. 23.0% of the district's population was Hispanic or Latino. Per capita income was $23,268; 16.8% of individuals were below the federal poverty line.
Included in Palms's white and Asian population figures are large Middle Eastern and South Asian populations. With an average annual household income of roughly $45,000, Palms was, until the end of the 20th century, generally considered the last working class, un-gentrified neighborhood on Los Angeles' Westside; however the real estate surge in the last decade has changed most of that. Residents include students at Santa Monica College, UCLA, and USC.

I feel it's great to be in Los Angeles, different variety and what's good about it is if you like a certain area or ethnic group, like korean, japanese, armenian etc. you can stay at a certain spot without travelling very far.I haven't been to the westside for a while. of course unless I have to show property or go to a show. So I love L.A.!
The last time I was at the Sherman Oaks Galleria was 5 years ago. I would love to go and have some fun there. I am sure the ones living in Sherman Oaks would be fascinated to come to Monterey Park to have some authentic chinese food!

You didn't grow up on the West Side, obviously.

Sure didnt. My grandparents and some aunts and uncles lived in that area but we always referred to it as Los Angeles.

Palms is not a city, its a name for a neighborhood/district (per post office, zip codes 90034-90035 are Los Angeles).

I know Palms is part of L.A. (there are only 4 independent west side cities). Palms was the first neighborhood west of La Cienega to annex itself to L.A. mainly because it didn't want to be gobbled up by Culver City (Pacific Palisades became part of L.A. for similar reasons, because it didn't want to be gobbled up by Santa Monica.) In retrospect this was probably a mistake ; if Palms had been annexed by Culver City the Craftsman and Spanish Revival bungalows, and the prewar bungalow courts, would probably still be there and there wouldn't be as many ugly late 50s-early 70s "dingbat" apartment buildings (now being torn down and replaced by tacky new apartment buildings).
