Is Los Angeles more expensive then New York (San Diego, San Francisco: to rent, condos)

But you can dream about having a decent 3-bedroom house in a decent area with good schools in kick ass San Antonio. Cause that's exactly where I live. In a decent 3-bedroom, in a decent area, and I go to a good school. I guess. lol. And before I lived in this beautiful house I lived in a 5 bedroom less than 2 months ago! No lie. But it was getting too expensive. It was $1,100 a month. And we had other bills including electricity, water, and utilies. The comparison between San Antonio and Los Angeles are so wide it's mind boggling. $1,100 will get you a barely-decent studio apartment (or if your lucky a shared roomate) apartment in LA. Which is so funny that it could get you a big ol house in TX. Hell, that amount can get you a 5+ bedroom mansion in Atlanta, GA!! Isn't life funny??

I guess you can say in general NY is cheaper because you wouldn't need a car as much as you do in LA. That will save you anywhere from $200-600+ a month, even if rent is a bit more expensive in NY.

But on average NY is colder so you'd have to buy heavier jackets.

Bah, they're both pretty expensive places to live, I'd allocate just about the same amount for both cities.

Nah New York is more expensive because even thought you don't worry about having a car public transportation really adds up. One does have to buy winter clothing which can also be expensive not to mention sales tax on stuff. Manhattan is so expensive especially right now. The cost of living in Manhattan will make you really worry about how you spend your money. My uncle says he cannot afford to live in New York he would stay in his neighborhood. I agree I know for a fact things are less expensive there.

General cost of living seems higher in NYC, but between car payments, insurance, maintenance and fuel, you can easily shell out $400 - $600 a month out here on the low end. Even at $2 a ride, I'd have a hard time racking up 200 - 300 trips on the subway every month...that's around 6 to 10 trips every day.

That said, L.A. does have a completely respectable metro subway system, even if it pales in comparison to New York's, and it is cheaper.

Overall, I'd say if you're used to New York then you probably won't have much sticker shock in L.A. when it comes to goods, services, rent and utilities. Just realize how spread out this city is, and how important a car seems so often to be.

Yeah having a car is important. I believe having a car is better than public transportation except when living in New York. A car will cost more here in New York. The best thing to do is just take public transportation. In California I would say things are more laid back and even though you have to drive I would rather do that then take the subway.

it does not matter because I already have a car so I am good. I cannot wait to get over there.

I really wish I could afford to live and work in this "laid back" part of L.A. I keep hearing about ^_^
