...seqouia and yosemite national parks. all the other sights worth seeing in CA are close to the coast along US HWY 101.

Three days round trip? I am not aware of much to see between LA and Sacramento... but I do know that Napa/Sonoma, San Fran, and Lake Tahoe are all an easy drive away from Sacramento. Within Sacramento, Midtown is nice, and Old Town is worth a look.

a road trip to sac and back? or is it a roadtrip of 3 days one way to sac?

if its one way. go up the coast. stop in santa barbara or in the surrounding areas. stay the night. keep on going up the coast till monterrey. do cannery row. the sea life preserve or whatever it is. you can stay the night, or not. then make your way into the city (SF). see the sights. cross the BAY bridge and go up the 80 till sac. in sac there is old sac. kinda small. sac is kinda small in general.

there are lots and lots of places between LA and SAC. it depends on how much time you have and what you like? city or country? point reyes nat'l sea shore is also beautiful. up the coast from marin, just nroth of SF. MUIR woods is nice. the santa cruz redwood forrest is great. the boardwalk in santa cruz is nice. they did film lost boys there after all. there is def lots to do in that span of land.

give us more details and we might be able to help you more. when are you planning on going. think of the weather.

definitely take 101 instead of 5, go up the coast. the one's itinerary sounds rather fabulous to me. I'd add in Napa and wine tasting if that's your thing (it's gorgeous even if it's not your thing, but a little out of the way if you're not going wine tasting). I'd also suggest taking a couple hours in Big Sur - absolutely gorgeous.
