Default How is Charles R. Drew University (Willowbrook, 120th Street) and the area surrounding it?

I am considering attending school there and want to know how a white girl in her older 20's would fair.

Any suggestions?

Also, I will be commuting daily from Venice.

Also, please realize that I am not a hysteric, have lived in NYC and am used to being a minority.

Thanks!

Didn't they lose their accreditation about a year or two ago?

they did lose some accreditation. mostly they lost the chance to have their students learn at king drew med center.

the medical school is small and partners with UCLA. i think you spend to years at UCLA before going over to CDU. im not sure. i think most people go their to be P.A.s now. since the hospital trauma closed and since they were facing accreditation issues the quality has suffered a bit. what is still good is that the uni still partners with augustus hawkins to train students in mental health and such. augustus hawkins is the psych unit at kind drew harbor whatever.

as for the area. willowbrook is nice. but its caught between watts, lynwood and compton. it gets rough. if you dont live in the area and are commuting, you will be fine. its a decent school. its going thru transition and pretty soon will kick the bad rep it got when it was more closely associated with killer king.

Both. Of all the other schools of medicine and/or Science and Health, what made you decide on this one? Ive been in LA all my life and I never knew anything about this school even though the website says its been there since 1966.

What are some of the other schools you were considering? What made you decide that this Drew is the place for you?

so its getto even tho you know nothing about it?

that makes no sense.

the area, well that is a bit rough.

i know my folks love chicken, but where else have you seen the counter at KFC behind 2 inches of bullet proof glass?

yeah it can be rough. its close to the projects. between some of the worst parts of LA. but willowbrook itself and the streets behind the hospital are pretty nice. you would be suprised.

i worked close by, took the train at the green/blue line intersection. never had a problem. walked to the dennys. to other restaurants in the area. during the day time. evening hours. i was fine.
i think the reputation it has is worse than the actual reality.

but if you are not used to urban living, then stay away. it can be scary.

Thanks all. I actually went down there today and it is not bad at all. I am not going to go exploring in the area, but campus itself is nice and it is right off the 105.

Willowbrook, 90059 community is really nice. It's main 105 freeway exist is Wilmington Ave. The Kenneth Hahn shopping center is right off the 105 FWY with a large grocery store, cleaners, all major fast foods stores, many other convenient retail shopping and eateries, new medical facility on corner of 119th & Wilmington Ave, King Drew Hospital with clean manicured landscaping, a Shell Gas Station across the street from King Drew Medical School. This area have affordable newer homes with people that have pride of ownership. The area is serviced well by the County of Los Angeles and Law Enforcement. The 105 FWY provide easy access to all areas of the Southern California area. The prices of houses in this particular area increasing? Los Angeles County and Law Enforcement have done a great job helping restore this community to a safer area, This is not Watts. No, this is not the GHETTO.
