Glamorous is not a word used to describe L.A.?
Hey guys I plan to move to Los Angeles in less than a year and I am so exited. Being the fact that New York is getting colder and colder because of winter. My aunt is telling my mom that I should think long and hard about moving to L.A. She said it is not as glamourous as I think it is. I don't really understand what she means. She said L.A. is way more expensive than New York. She said the weather is not as great as people say it is. She said I will not like life over there because of the fact that I am from New York. I am going over there for school but they are my close family who live over there. My uncle says it is a nice place and I will like it. He wants me to move because I am his favorite nephew. My aunt keeps telling me to think long and hard about my decision. She said things are hard over there and that it is hard to find a job. Right now in New York it is extremely hard to find a job and things are so expensive. The sales tax is high and things are not really working out for me here. I just want to know what's is so hard about living over there. She said life is easier in New York and less expensive. By New York I mean Manhattan thats where I live. She said that going away for college in L.A. is stupid because there are so many other places that are closer to New York even though I want to go far far away. She said life will be very very hard for me over there and that there is a 99% chance I will move back because I will not make it on my own over there.
I want to know if anyone agrees with her point of view. Is New york really a better more affordable place than L.A. Is it a bad idea to go so far away for college especially if you wish to study media art and animation? I mean L.A. cannot be more expensive than New York from what I personally seen. I mean where ever you go it will be hard especially if you are young. And she says it is not as glamourous as New York and L.A. has more bad areas than good and more dangerous. And the weather will make you sick she says. If I weren't hearing wrong it sounds like she does not want me to move over there. On the other hand my uncle says the complete opposite and says even if it is hard he is my close family and will help me out when I need something whatever it may be. Just tell me what you guys think. Is my aunt right or partly right or dead wrong.

Where will you be living? Do you know your housing budget?
Where will you attending school?
Will you be working part time?
Is your uncle providing any support?
Does your uncle live near your school?
Will you have a car?
Anyone else that you know in LA besides your uncle?

Your aunt is right that it is not as glamorous as its cracked up to be, i have to disagree that it is more dangerous than parts of newyorkcity. It is EXTREMELY expensive if you want to even live in a decent area, but through this economy things are becoming more affordable.
Do you have a job line up out here, if not i wouldn't plan on moving unless you ahve some money to live on while you look for a job
whos paying for your school, are you working to pay tuition, or your parents
do you have a car or plan on taking public transportation
my advice if you can afford it is make a visit and see the areas your thinking about living in before you get carried away, there are many other places i would rather live in if i were you, but for what your majoring in you are in the right spot. LA is highly competitive socially, can be superficial, keeping up with the jones's type thing, do not get caught up in it, you'll be in debt like they are, lol
the upside is in certain areas it can be beautiful, and you will be culturally shocked. For a young person i think it will really open up your eyes, its completely different out here in a positive way. In general people are a little more chill and relaxed and open minded. You will like it no doubt just make sure you have all your ducks in a line first.

Personally I say go for it! Hey, if it's your dream and you want some adventure, and who doesn't, then follow your heart, So what if it ends up not being what you want, at least you tried! College is a time when we are leaving the nest and need to fly--so fly and enjoy yourself. No one likes everyplace. That is up to you to find out if you like Los Angeles.

it could be that your aunt does not want you to move to LA. or it could be that your mom is only saying that your aunt is saying this because your mom does not want you to move to LA.
many many people move to LA. some of them make it, some of them dont. LA is glamorous. but not for everyone.
i think what they are referring to is this idea that you can come to LA and see movie stars and palm trees and end up on TV. thats the glamour people associate with LA. it exists, but not for everyone.
since you are moving to a new place im sure you are well aware of the risks you are taking. you can very well make it, or it can very well break you.
if you are set on doing it, and have some familial support, then go for it. but dont expect hand outs. this is your life and no one elses.
good luck.

You will love it. LA is perfect for a student & young person. Quite an adventure. I moved to NYC [actually Brooklyn] when I was your age - 20 yrs old - and loved every minute. It was such a different world for a California kid & still is an exciting city. But I moved back to California & have never regretted leaving New York for a variety of reasons.

It really does sound like they are trying to scare you into staying in NY. Sure LA is overhyped by the media but it is a great place to live in general. It's not all glam though as you can read about in this forum but LA has plenty to offer if you are willing to work hard.
And she said the weather isn't as great as it sounds? The only bad weather is when it gets really hot in the summer and just turn on the AC or live closer to the coast.
Don't let others choose for you. Visit LA and draw your own conclusions.

If you are expecting MTV "LA", you will be very disappointed. This is a great place to be, but like everywhere else, it has its problems.

LA is too big to label with one word. There are many "glamorous" parts, and even more crappy parts of the city. That said, there is a city/district/neighborhood for just about everyone. You should visit for a week to see if it's for you.
