Default Moving Back to Whittier,Ca from Portland,OR

Here's my question/situation... I grew up in Whittier,Ca in the 80's. Lived near Pickering and Beverly...moved to Portland,Or shortly after the big quake. I've been back many times to visit family and friends but mostly stayed in Pico Rivera. I now have my own family with grade school aged kids. My dear friend has offered her house while she travels for a year. We would be off Camilla and Painter and Hoover Elementry would be our neighborhood school- when I was there it was great, but how is the school now?

My friend asks only that we cover the costs of ulilties and take care of her dogs, what can I except in the costs of the these bills? Is it really expensive to cover these?
I am an administrative assistant, how are the jobs near Whittier - would I have to travel far?

Any input is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
