I've found the online rating sites to be no good in my experience.

That's were mistakes happen and you don't discover them until its too late and that's also where you get a price, then the insurance co looks at the property and "bingo" the price changes about a month after you pay for it.

The op is right. The commissioned agent gets paid by the company and it costs no more to buy through him/her or direct. The cheaper companies that sell direct have very inexperienced personel that are basically telemarketers.
This has been my experience.

Plus, the online raters are actually run by insurance agents who set up online systems, so you are still dealing with a commissioned agent, but your doing the work and making the decisions. If/when they are corrected, it generally means your price may go up.

I did online raters for a rental a few years ago. I added an alarm, but it was local only so, price went up. I didnt add the fireplace, which I didnt even see, and price went way up. They also told me I had to remove some bars from a bathroom and living room window, even though they had the pop-outs. I ended up cancelling it after 3 weeks and paid my old company. It was a waste of time.

After comparing the old and new, that new policy didn't have a bunch of the extra's, like 150% extension on the fire iinsurance & the code upgrade coverage. Those are the things an experienced insurance agent takes care of and that's also why cheapest is not the best route to take which is the primary driving focus of online raters.

home and auto shouldn't be purchased like plane tickets, hotel rooms, or even term life insurance. There's too many variables.

About the auto... some of these "cheapo" auto companies have clauses such as where they dont replace parts with authorized factory parts. I've had cheap cars and used cheap parts.. you end up replacing them within a year or so. Again this has been my experience.

last thing.... those people sitting in shelters right now. They didn't have proper insurance. The people who went directly to hotels did.

sorry for the long post, but I've been through this a lot.

Car insurance is a scam. Someone should take on the industry.

If you drive your car to work you have to pay higher rates than if you don't drive to work.

Now think about this.

If you drive to work, you usually work 8 hours, you usually sleep 8 hours, leaving you only 8 possible hours of even having time to drive at all.

If you don't have a job and don't drive to work you have 24 hours a day to possibly drive.

Insurance company claim that those who drive to work are a higher risk, in part because they are on the road in rush hour traffic.

Well, those who don't have a job can also be on the road at those very same rush hour periods, yet they pay less insurance simply because they do not have a job to drive their car too.

Anyone can think, but you need to consider all the facts to come up with a well thought out plan or conclusion.

Let me add that you can save a lot on your insurance when you stick with the same company for all your insurance needs. I remember my wife and I had seperate insurance agents and when I finally took my wifes advice to jump ship and get a policy together our insurance bill declined to the point that my car was costing us nothing. We also have our life insurance, and home insurance together as well.

I am wondering though how this relates to the Los Angeles forum? I think that we can discuss this in the general forums.
