Van Nuys just south of Victory: Safe or gang central?

I am a little white girl and I felt pretty safe living on Sepulveda and Sherman Way in Van Nuys for nearly two years. Of course, it can be ugly in that area, and there were some shady activities going on (they would always bust prostitutes near my apt. complex), but I never had any crime problems. I did get nervous if I had to walk from my car in the underground lot to my apt. at night, but I would be on guard in any urban area after dark. I lived in an upscale apt. complex in Woodland Hills and there was a rape there - anything can happen anywhere!

I say that you will definitely be fine there- the area where I lived was even worse than the area you are describing.

Do you find it annoying to walk down sepulveda blvd?

I think its not a good area even though it may appear to be ok especially with some of the new development.

If your a girl/woman walking down sepulveda blvd, day or night, you most likely will be safe but you will most certainly be propositioned for sex, heckeled with lude gestures, or find several of the same cars u turning and hoping you are not actually waiting for a bus at that bus stop.

I really didn't walk down Sepulveda too much - maybe to the Jons once or twice (with my husband). We would take walks around our neighborhood sometimes, and some of the homes were actually pretty nice. There was a lot of litter on some of the streets (and yes, used condoms before the big "prostitute crackdown"). Most of the time I would just go from my apt. to my car, and vice versa. I always felt very thankful that I didn't have to stand at those bus stops, and was never propositioned or harrassed while living in that area.

I wouldn't have felt safe walking around outside at night, but I would feel that way in a lot of places. I'm not paranoid, just always very cautious and aware of my surroundings.

Is that area of Van Nuys a luxurious place to live? No way. But we had a nice apt. and our landlord was great. I have to admit that we did all of our shopping in Woodland Hills on weekends, and I hated how far we would have to go to find a Ralphs. There are worse places, though - like Panorama City, which was right down the street.
