I was wondering the same thing. We don't have any soot and ash on the Westside.

I can't answer why you are not getting ash. I have lots of it. Even the news stated ash was falling from Long Beach to Malibu. Here is a clip from a gardener in the South Bay who states she is also inundated in ash. So I am not alone or imagining it.

"I live in the South Bay, Los Angeles area, and am inundated with ash from the surrounding fires. Does anyone know what effect this will have on my garden? Is the ash okay to put in the composter? Although we are about 40 miles from the nearest fires (thankfully) the ash on the cars is about 1/4" thick and you can sweep it up with a broom."

Here is another person talking about ash:

"Torrance is one giant crematorium. I walked outside this morning, and the air reeked of fire. As I stepped on the sidewalk, the air from my step kicked up a while layer of ashes from the ground."

Same thing in El Segundo until around noon yesterday. There was still a little bit of ash falling then, but much less than the previous 24-hrs. Streets were slurry-sealed last week and like Beth said, it looked like we'd received a dusting of snow overnight.

It's really doing a number on my lungs - we were planning an afternoon outdoors on Sunday but ended up indoors instead. The air seems to have cleared a bit this morning but the entire weekend we were sprinkled with ash and I have yet to clean all the ashy surfaces around the home.

Yeah, air quality isn't too great right now on the westside. I wouldn't recommend being outdoors any more than necessary, and keep your windows closed.

We've been spared the ash but the smoke yesterday was very bad around Pasadena. It remained foul all night but this morning isn't too bad even though the wind is blowing out of the east. I think the fire departments are doing a terrific job on the Orange county fires [the main source of our smoke] but smoke from the Sylmar fire covers the San Fernando valley\ Malibu.

What a crummy weekend. And next weekend could be a repeat the weather services are predicting another 'santa ana'.

Air was fine in the Pasadena area until around 3pm on Saturday. You could litterally see the cloud of smoke blowing in from Yorba Linda. Saturday night and all Sunday were smokey, not much ash. They canceled the Pasadena Marathon on Sunday morning, bummer. Getting better today.
