I'm looking at an apartment and wondering what you all think of the area regarding safety.

It's in the Palms I think... Venice and Vinton Ave.

Thanks

Seems like there is a bit of burglary/auto theft in that area, but not a lot of violent crime. Overall, it's not a terribly attractive area, but if your car is going to be garaged and you are going to be in a secure apt... and the price is great... you should be ok. You're close to downtown Culver City there, which is cool. You're also not to far from the beach either.

The building is secure. The parking, while off street, isn't gated.

Too bad, I would've taken it. Going to look at a place on 12th and pico today in SM..better?

the area surrounding Pico Blvd in SM is the sketchiest part of the city and where the limited amount of gang activity that occurs in SM takes place. in fact, there were some gang killings in that area not too long ago. You could also check along Ocean Park Blvd, its not nearly as expensive as other parts of SM, but much safer than along Pico.

As for Palms, I have friends who live right in the heart of Palms and have never had any issues. We visit them quite frequently as well. Palms is one of the few working class neighborhoods in LA proper that is dominated by one ethnicity. I like it there and visit the restaurants in that area of town fairly often. IMHO, Palms is a great area to live if you work on the westside and can't afford to be close to the beach. From my experiences, Palms is no more/less safe than any other areas on the westside. It's also centrally located if you work in other parts of town like the miracle mile, hollywood, or downtown.

12th & Pico should be pretty decent, however most parts of Pico in Santa Monica can be a bit seedy.

I lived on Motor Ave. in Palms for about a year. We had a nice townhouse style apartment, with gated parking. Motor Ave. and Venice Blvd in Palms could use some work, but it was nice being close to Downtown Culver City and Cheviot Hills.

Palms is a nice value for the westside, but you can find similar deals in West LA, Mar Vista, and some parts of Venice.

I think you meant to say NOT dominated by any one ethnicity.

I posted an extensive photo tour of the area a few weeks ago:
