i want to be in an earthquake, but a small one, 5.0 at most. ive never been in an earthquake, so i just want to know what it's like. i definantly dont want to be here when this "big one" hits.

Does the Universal Studios Tour still include the earthquake segment? It's pretty realistic!

Most of the smaller quakes we experience usually last for about 5 seconds, though there have been some bigger ones (1994 Northridge quake comes to mind). As Cre8 suggested, you might want to experience the Earthquake segment of the Universal Studios tour, as it's quite realistic. Once you've lived through your first quake and tell your friends and family about it, consider yourself a California native.

At least with tornadoes and hurricanes there is a little bit of predictability. You can sort of prepare. The 71 and 94 quakes hit when I was in a deep sleep. It's like a bomb going off. Pretty unnerving.

Charles, I agree with you about the aftershocks. I remember we were getting 4.0 and 5.0 for weeks and months after the major quake,,,It was not fun at all, and was unnerving. But since then I think I have felt maybe 1 or 2 little ones, lasting just a few seconds. So its really been a no issue for me since.
To me tornadoes are the worst. They may get alittle bit of predictability, but that never seems to help the people much who are caught in the tornadoes path,.,,Also, for the most part, the damage they inflict on homes, buildings etc is soooo much worse than the damage today's earthquakes create,,,glad we don't get them here in LA..

The very first post asks about LA being "leveled" by a quake. I'm not from CA but is it even possible for a quake to be that large to actually LEVEL the city??

Probably not all the buildings especially not the ones built in the past ten years or so. Also, I can't imagine wooden, one story ranch style homes going down in any earthquake - however they could easily catch fire from a gas leak (which is a great reason to have an earthquake shutoff valve on your gas meter - I had one in when I lived there.)

Has anyone else noticed the amount of earthquakes they are having just outside Mexicali? There has been four 5.0's in the last ten days from the same spot. Kinda freaky. Even the aftershocks are sizeable at 4-5.
Feb 9th 5.5
Feb 9th 5.1
Feb 11th 4.9
Feb 12th 5.0
Feb 19th 5.0
Feb 19th 4.7
Check out this site for the latest in that region Realtime Mexicali Earthquakes

Yep. A good reason for that... the Earth's crust is very active.
