A great area to take a date, when you cross that bridge, is on the lake at Westlake. There are three non-chain restaurants right on the lake that are very good. You can eat outside on their patios while watching the electric boats and ducks go by on the lake while looking at the beautiful homes you might own someday. Very romantic during the evening and great for lunch. One of the restaurants is international and serves great sushi, salads, etc. It was eating at one of these restaurants looking at the beautiful scenery back in 89' that got me to move here. I found a place a week later. Good luck.

Mexican places
Ok, you want Mexican..
Los Dos Amigos on Thousand Oaks Blvd is great! (get the tortas)
Lettys Market on Hillcrest, in Newbury park has yummy burritos! They have the Colorful mexican pastry things, all sorts of meats.
Chuys is a fun place, its on Moorpark Road (they also have one in Moorpark & probably a couple other locations). Its not a chain, though. They have tritip and chicken platters and really good tacos.
3 Amigos on Avenida de los Arboles is really good too. Kind of a hole in the wall sort of place - lots of construction workers always in there. Its good food.
I thought of a few other restaurants that we enjoy:
Aunt Leftys in Westlake - great sub sandwiches! They have really good lasagna too & delicious garlic bread!
P & L Burger on Avenida de los Arboles in TO. Homecooked sort of hamburger joint. They have burgers, gyros, sandwiches. Good food at good prices.
Side St. Cafe. Lawrence Dr in Newbury Park. A small place in the middle of an industrial area. Great breakfasts!
Now, I am hungry!
