Well that and its a lot easier to be monolingual when you're a dominant world power and everyone else is learning your language. Why does an American or a Briton need to speak Swedish when Björn speaks English?

Pretty much. English is the language of money nowadays. Eventually it'll probably change to Mandarin.

Ya... my High School required 2 years of foreign language and the choices offered were French, German, Spanish and Latin... well, my point is employers should be specific when looking for employees with a second language skill... a language is a language... isn't it

Because that is arrogant. Learning a new language gives you a whole new way of thinking. It expands your mind and makes you more intelligent. It shows interest in and respect for other cultures, which endears you to them and makes relations better. There are many reasons it is valuable to be bi-lingual.

Learning spanish as a job requirement depends on what type of work you will do.

There are many industries that do not require a 2nd language period.

If you are going to work with mexican people, then spanish would be an asset of course since that is a preferred method of communication for many.
Keep in mind there is no requirement and no major incentives for immigrants to learn english so many don't. That is why you read about this need.

I took 4 years of spanish, 2 in high school and 2 in college. The last 2 were a complete waste of time. The language taught formally is different than what is spoken in Los Angeles. I've actually grown very tired of the coy confusion, chuckles, and inaccurate corrections I hear from people when trying to communicate with them on very simple subject matters.

Looking back, I'm glad I took 2 years in high school, but would have preferred to have taken another language during college that I would have personally enjoyed learning and would have used for both personal & business purposes later in life. I'm still here so its not too late

My observation -------- Hispanic people will call my office and ask if I speak Spanish and I say, no, I speak English. The most can carry on a conversation, but I believe they are more comfortable speaking in their own language.

Really? Here's the text of the Treaty -- I don't see any mention of Spanish being an official language .....
