Considering moving to LA, how bad are the gangs there and what areas do i need to stay away from?

bad neighborhoods are easy to avoid, just pick somewhere close to your office so your commute isn't too bad.

Default which part of LA

LA is a very large city spanning from the beaches to the valleys.

In general, the areas that are the least safe are the South Los Angeles, and East Los Angeles areas in the basin. If you are planning to move to the valley part of Los Angeles, you want to stay away from the North Eastern part of the valley, which is the Pacoima, Sylmar, Panorama City, and Sun Valley areas.

Los Angeles in general though has significantly dropped its crime rates across the board. Many of the blighted areas that have gang members are getting redeveloped and the gangs are moving out of those areas.

You might want to take a look at the LA Times homicide map.

Los Angeles Times Homicide Map

Choose "All dates", then keep clicking on the "next" button to show more. It will show you on the map where the trouble areas are.

The times stopped updating it in November, but you can still see everything that happened in 2008.
