Dangerous animals near L.A.
I'm a big backpacker and backcountry camper, therefor I like to know what to look out for when immediate help would be a pipe dream. I figure rattlesnakes but what else? Spiders, insects?

There are these huge black widow spiders..... crazy-huge. Coyotes are everywhere, but not dangerous to humans.

Don't worry about black widow spiders while hiking. You are more likely to see tarantulas & scorpions in the hillsides but they are not dangerous either unless you intentionally provoke them. Rattlesnakes are out sunning themselves during chilly winter mornings but rarely strike unless you step on them. Coyotes & mountain lions are around but never attack people 99% of the time.

For the full list (Africanized killer bees!) see "Ecology of Fear" by the slightly delusional Mike Davis.

I wouldnt be worried about mammals.
