Where should I live to enjoy the ocean? (Pasadena, Redondo Beach: apartment, how much)

I will be moving to the LA metro area in the next month or so. How far inland can I go if I want to be able to get to the beaches and boat launches in a reasonable time.

Also I like to mountain bike and rock climb where could i live to enjoy all these activities?

I will be mainly working from home. All work outside the home will be done in the surrounding cities of LA. So really I am first looking for a pleasant place to live where I can be as active as possible with the activities I have expressed interest in.

i'm not sure of any rock climbing places near the coast around here, but there is definitely mtn. biking opportunities. you may be interested in the laguna beach area. there are a few different places to launch/store boats and some great mtn. bike trails at the Top of the World park. it is very expensive to live down there, just like all the other coastal communities in the socal.

Define "reasonable" time. Also, it depends on how much you want to spend.

You may think you're getting ridiculous answers, but see, if you look at the map, you will notice the parts of LA which border the Pacific Ocean. You will also notice the mountains. Everywhere in LA county is close to oceans and mountains. If you like to have them within 10 minutes, expect to pay for this luxury.

It is, in general, cheaper to live 10 minutes from the mountains and 40 minutes from the ocean, than the reverse arrangement.

This is a very general answer to a very general question. I enjoy mountains and beaches as well - as do many of us - if you can be more specific with your questions, we can help you more.

Move to the Valley. You have some nice mountain biking trails heading towards Pasadena area (East) and you can get to the beach within an hour or so (West).

I live in Woodland Hills and can go rock climbing at Stoney Point (Chatsworth) which is about 10 minutes north, or at an area off Las Virgines/Malibu Canyon Road (about 15 minutes) which also has nice mountain biking trails.

It takes 25 minutes to get to the beach if taking Topanga Canyon and about 30-35 minutes if taking Las Virgenes.

Try Hermosa Beach or Redondo Beach and get a place within walking distance of the ocean. You may have to give up some sq feet for your apartment, but not having to drive to get to the sand is worth it in my opinion.

Malibu has great beach and hiking access however it is much more secluded.
You will need to drive into santa monica for certain services/business etc.
