Slig, please think of somewhere else to live, other than Compton..There are lots of close in areas, that are culturally diversified that would be better and safer than Compton..Most of Los Angeles is pretty diversified for that matter.

What about Long Beach? I would guess it's quite a bit more expensive to live there.

yes, it is. I think I would look at Gardena, Carson, maybe north toward Highlnad Park (not the best area, but certainly better than Compton) Oh, there are so many almost inter city sections of Los Angeles. We visit quite often but haven't lived there for years so I am sure others will have suggestions for you. good luck, I am sure you will find what you are seeking

I'm Strongly considering a move to the LA area (I'll move anywhere from LA south I find a job after I take the bar this summer) What are some decent livable areas of the city that are also inexpensive (relative to elsewhere in the city).

what you would call inexpensive and someone else would call it are two different things, what are you looking at price wise? If you want to keep the price down I would head south, rather than with-in the city. The few really decent and safe areas of Los Angeles will be pricey..

Glad to hear that you are officially retracting your comments in this thread lalife.

As to Compton Slig, I know nothing about it - I recently read about a city with a bad rep in the LA area gentrifying - can't remember if this was Compton or Watts.

And on a very random sidenote- in college I had a friend from Compton and a friend from inner-city Fresno. Obviously very different cities/ geographic areas, but I always found it interesting that my friend from Compton (a city with one of the most hyped reps in the nation) always said he would never step foot in Fresno because of how bad it was there, which actually didn't surprise me from all of the Fresno stories I had heard.

Although as I posted on another thread Fresno is very changed. Fresno went through a bad streak related to high unemployment (about 15 to 16%) in the late 1980s/1990s but is now safer than many cities.

But it seems it is still hard to shake that old high crime talk, I just wish people would talk more about the turnaround. Maybe they will next year. Michael Badalucco of The Practice will start filming a new movie in Fresno in May about a very successful anti-gang program started here.

City-data lists the 2007 crime rates of cities as:
US average 320.9
Fresno - 421.6
San Francisco - 501.2
Sacramento - 608.8
Compton (2006 rate since it is not updated yet) - 660.9

2008 homicide rates:
Fresno (population 485,000) 40 homicides - 8.2 murders per 100,000
Sacramento (population 475,000) 48 homicides - 10.1 murders per 100,000
San Francisco (population 825,000) 99 homicides - 12 murders per 100,000
Compton (population 94,000) 28 homicides - 29.8 per 100,000

Take a drive through Compton and decide for yourself. Either that or ask an LA County Sheriff's deputy.
