Don't let the name fool you...Brentwood is ghetto. There's bums out there and everything. That's where OJ stabbed Nicole.

So based on this one crime I should be scared to be in Brentwood? Random crime should scare no one-- ever. Unless I am targeted within a very small scope (like, just me) I will never be scared to wander (willy/nilly) anywhere.

For one thing, the victim was in idiot...if a guy is pointing a gun at you and demanding your wallet, give it to him. It's not worth dying over.
Crime will happen in upscale neighborhoods since most folks have their guard down thinking they are perfectly safe. That's also where the money is, if you were a crook would you go to a poor neighborhood to rob someone or a rich one? It's like when they asked Willie Sutton why he robbed banks...his reply "because that's where the money is".

there is nowhere in LA that is immune to crime. wasn't it just last year that there was a robbery spree in bel-air? wasn't paris hilton's home above the sunset strip just broken into within the last several months? i remember some time in 2008 a young woman was killed in santa monica and old ladies were being robbed in nice communities on the westside. we're in LA, you're not immune to anything no matter where you are. only an idiot would think otherwise.

Okay we get it. You hate LA and think it's an awful and dangerous place. We get it! You don't have to remind us every single day.

Does anyone remember the 1988 gang shootout in Westwood Village, where an innocent bystander was killed? It killed the commercial viability of the area for years as people then migrated to Pasadena and Santa Monica for shopping/entertainment.
So yeah, no urban area, no matter how nice or upscale, is immune to violence. But I'd rather live in LA than "safer" suburbs like Laguna Niguel.

LA is a big city.
Big cities have crime.
No society is immune to crime.
Get real.
No matter how awful it is that this happens, it's part of society.

When I post on crime and safety topics re: L.A. and what neighborhoods are safe, I make the assumption that those responding are familiar with urban conditions in general. Those familiar with San Francisco, New York, Boston, DC, Chicago, London, etc. would know about general rules to stay safe in large cities, and in talking about L.A. I assume that people are familiar with those rules. Perhaps that's not such a good assumption - as Benny Hill said, "never assume because it makes an ass out of you and me". Perhaps there are people reading these forums who really don't have any clue as to how to stay safe in large metropoli (or even most medium sized metropoli). Didn't really think about this issue until just now.
Also - there was a guy who I grew up with who wound up becoming a career criminal/burglar (he's probably dead or in prison now - haven't spoken to him since the '90s) and he described Pacific Palisades as a "criminal's paradise" because people took such lax security measures in comparison to other affluent neighborhoods like Beverly Hills or the Hollywood Hills (particularly because he was a white guy who'd gone to Pali and knew the layouts of the Palisades streets and thus had advantages in his chosen field of crime) and claimed he supported himself by doing breakins in the Palisades because it represented easy money.
