Best places to live near Hollywood?
Just wondering.. what are the areas that I should be looking at near Hollywood that are safe, affordable (looking for 1br or studio no more than $1500... prefereably less), and is in an active area close to shops, restaurants, gyms, bars, etc?
I may be moving there for work which is located in universal city. I figured living in hollywood is close enough to work and also close to the city life.

Some of that is based purely on personal preference and comfort level, but I'd consider just walking up and down the residential streets within walking distance of the core area between Vine and La Brea or so and then branch out from there. The apartments between Hollywood Blvd and Franklin between Highland and Vine (the Yucca Corridor) might have something available for your budget. There are a big range of places there, including some beautiful historic buildings filled with nice large studios. You'd certainly be within walking distance to everything you're looking for - the location is perfect. It's pretty safe for the most part, and although rapidly gentrifying there are probably still some deals to be found.

There's apartments in Universal City, but you can also try Burbank and Studio City.

I second Studio City or perhaps the area around Laurel Canyon. You might be able to find something small in your price range.

If you're looking for city life, I would suggest looking somewhere in Hollywood (preferably west of Vine) or Los Feliz. Both are very walkable neighborhoods and very safe and if you're working in Universal City, you'll be able to take the subway to work. I live in Burbank and go to Studio City quite a bit and while they're nice, clean, and safe neighborhoods, they are extremely suburban in nature and culture. I think the San Fernando Valley is where the phrase "nobody walks in LA" came from. If you want big city life, I would steer clear of most of the Valley.

West Hollywood might work for you. It's certainly more active than Studio City, and for under $1500, you can find a 1 bedroom pretty easily. In general, the eastern part of West Hollywood tends to be a bit cheaper (and closer to Hollywood, which is good for you). Check out the areas west of Highland, south of Sunset, north of Santa Monica.

If you want bustling street life, (near) round the clock amenities, stellar transit service and charming architecture and diversity to boot?
The Yucca Corridor it is, yo.
Here are a few pics I took:
