Homicides in LA (Los Angeles: crime rates, live, statistics)

Im suprised that LA already has 100 homicides i thought the first to reach 100 on the "Official" crime stats homicides was going to be nyc or chicago. Los Angeles Times Homicide Map

This is in the whole of LA county. The LA City total is less.

I wonder if 2009's total will be higher than 2008, with the recession. Also, 2008 was like a 40-year low for L.A.

Violent crime in L.A. is up over 2008, but is at the same level as 2007. It's not like the '90s (yet, anyways) and is still beneath SF levels (SF surpassed LA in violent crime in '07 for the first time since before WW2).

Violent crime in LA is not very high if you compare it to other cities. I typically compare it to Florida cities since I live with someone who wants to move back to Florida -- and LA crime is ridiculously low compared to what they are offering (per capita).

Also, don't forget: There have been a few "family murders" this year. The Santa Claus guy, the other people who have been upset about the economy and have killed their entire families. This increases the homicide rate though it really doesn't speak much about random crime.

Read the Homicide Report blog at the LA Times. If you're not in a gang, your chance of being murdered goes way, way down.

The per capita murder rate isn't that bad for a big city. I grew up in Baltimore -- 250-300 murders a year for a city of less than 600K. Though, again, if you're not dealing drugs, your chance of being murdered there is quite low.

Well you can say the same about every place in America but if the la murder trend continues you guys may have an ol 600 homicide year.

I'd like to see the same statistics, but with gang on gang homicides listed seperately.

You should bear in mind that LA County (which is what the graph you're citing is for) is the largest county in the US, with over 10 million people.

Generally crime has been way down in LA, thanks in part to our NY import Police Chief and to a strong economy. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if crime rates start going back up some during this recession.
