I'll be moving out to Los Angeles from New York City soon, and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for long distance movers? Any advice would be appreciated -- especially from someone who has done the move already! Thanks!!

I loved from Dallas to LA about 4 years ago. Packed all of my stuff in a moving truck and drove out here. I'm not exactly sure what kind of advice you're looking for though. Can you be more specific?

I made the move from NYC to LA about 18 months ago. I used North American Van Lines. They were very professional and constantly kept me abreast of their schedule. Even gave me a refund when one of my lamps had broken.

It cost me about $1,500 for the moving truck and gas. What did it run you to use a professional moving company? A friend of mine moved his parents from LA to North Carolina and I think it cost him about $10,000.

I used Door-to-Door -- a "PODS" -like company, where you pack up the moving units yourself and they transport them. It was much cheaper than paying a full-service moving company. I didn't compare the cost to renting a truck, but I would have had to get the full-size truck with car trailer, and I had no interest in driving that across the country and then parking it for a couple of days on my narrow street. I found Door-to-Door to be pretty good. Also, we had a lag time of about a month between leaving our old place and moving into our new place, and they'll store the moving units for free for three weeks; after that they charge about the same as a regular storage unit.

MF123 - Do you know the name of the specific North American agent you used? Apparently there's a bunch in the city and some aren't as reputable as others. Thanks!!

Moving companies are all basically the same. The people they employ to move your stuff (including your wife's underwear drawer) are pretty much the same.
