I live in Manhattan Beach and work in Santa Monica. I need to get in by 7:30 am and leave the office around 5:30 pm. What are some commute strategies, especially going home? I work near the Pier in Santa Monica. Thanks.

Try this:

Ocean>Nielson>Pacific>Washington> Via Marina>Admiralty>Fiji>Lincoln

that will get you to the playa vista area. i'm not familiar with the commute south of there, but that was the fastest way to get from SM to MDR when i used to make that commute.

If you're a bit more brave, you can take 4th St through SM and Venice and cut across Abbot Kinney, but that can be a bit difficult if you're not familiar with Venice. Just make sure you end up on Via Marina. Also, avoid Lincoln at all costs. i'm not sure about the freeway, but i doubt it's much better than the side streets.

FYI, the section of the drive through playa del rey that 987s mentioned gets extremely congested. it can take 10 minutes to go just a couple of miles. i'm not sure lincoln through westchester/LAX is any better though. it's a tough commute, there's no way around it.

I would consider "10 minutes to go a couple of miles" fast anywhere in LA. If you get stuck in a surface street traffic jam here it can easily take over an hour to drive a mile, learned that the hard way on Santa Monica Blvd at 4pm.
