can anyone help us out with info about transportation without a car, and places to stay that would be convenient and cheap to help along our use of public transpo

If you want to enjoy your stay in LA, rent a car.

A car is easier, but not actually totally necessary. At tripadvisor.com about 40% of the people asking about vacations in the L.A. forum are going by public transportation and there is usually great feedback when a poster does a trip report about how usuing public transport went.

It is hard to believe for us so dependent on cars in So Cal for our daily chores, but with a combination of taxis and public transport usually get most tourists to the typical sights just fine actually.

Remember, for many foreigners and young travelers (especially under 21 who a car rental company usually won't rent to, especially 21 or younger AND foreign) a car rental isn't an option. Again, I do agree a car is easiest if possible! If it isn't, it isn't the end of the world and you can still have a good time.
