I am thinking of possibly living in either Glendale or West LA and traveling to USC for school.

I saw that I would have to take the 10 when traveling from the West, and I would have to take the 5, 10, and 110 if traveling from Glendale.

Does anyone know how bad the traffic is on these highways in the sections I will be using?

Thanks for your help, this forum is a great thing.

first, they aren't highways, there's freeways, so no traffic lights.
second, they are all equally packed during rush hour.

To avoid rush hour -------- drive between mid-night and 4 a.m. You will hit traffic any other time. Sorry.

Live in Pasadena, South Pas or Studio City and you can take the train. They have free park and ride lots.

from Glendale you don't have to take the 10 at all... just the 5 and 110.

I live in Glendale and take the 5 and 110 everyday to my night job in El Segundo, and used to use to get to my day job in Manhattan Beach. It usually took about half an hour to 45 minutes to get to USC from my place if I left around rush hour time in the morning, IIRC (I haven't worked a day job requiring use of the 5 or 110 in about a year). The 110 through downtown is one of the most consistently packed freeways in the city. The 5 southbound to the 110 can be pretty bad in the mornings.

Thanks for the info. 30-45 mins is not that bad for a rush hour time.

How bad is the drive from Glendale to USC in the afternoon?

It's been a while since I've made that drive not during rush hour, but IIRC it would probably take about 20-30 minutes. I guess it depends what part of Glendale you live in. I live in the northwestern part up by Burbank.

Also if you travel to USC during the nighttime rush around 6-7 PM you might be pleasantly surprised at how little traffic there will be. The southbound 110 through downtown usually isn't too bad at night, it's like you'll be pulling a reverse commute almost. Some days are worse than others of course. Wed-Fri traffic is the worst and that part of your commute can have 10-15 minutes added to it. Monday traffic usually isn't too bad. But the 110 northbound from USC to Glendale is always pretty crappy during evening rush. Expect an average of 45 minutes or so.

Overall USC to Glendale isn't a very bad commute though, you could do a heck of a lot worse than that in this city.

Gandhi, i would say to get from Glendale to USC during rush hour would be 1 hour minimum. No matter what freeway you took.

That's a crock of **** and I don't think you drive that route regularly. I drive from La Canada through downtown many times, and in clear weather it takes only 30-40 minutes to get through downtown in the thick of morning rush hour (7:30-8 AM). 10-15 minutes on the 2 fwy, 5 (or less) on the 5 fwy, and 15-20 minutes on the 110 fwy. The 110 through downtown really isn't as bad as it sounds. It would take at least 2 major accidents for a 1 hour drive from Glendale to USC.
