My girlfriend is a native angelino. She's been looking at places in Long Beach because she wants the observation Deck of the Queen Mary to be our neighborhood bar.

Queen Mary, huh? How does she feel about experiencing paranormal stuff and running into ghosts?

She might be too burnt after work to get to the bar. Proximity, and therefore time spent withering in bumper-to-bumper grind, to work ought to be among the first concerns for those who entertain the idea of moving to LB. Whereas it's nice to live near the beach for a comparably reasonable price, people often find it's location pretty remote from most job centers. But if she's a native, she may have already investigated this, and found the rare L.A. combo of a decent place, doable price, near the water, stuff to do in town, with a bar on a massive haunted boat. Not bad.

It's a good boat - we had our high school proms there.

Yeah, Long Beach is horribly trafficked. Worse than LA. In LA it's all about timing. Long Beach rarely doesn't have traffic. And yeah they say the Queen Mary is haunted, lots of stories about that. I don't believe in that stuff but FYI.

Neither I, nor my girlfriend, actually believe in the paranormal. I've heard stories about the Queen Mary's notorious propeller room, and I'm sure it's just as creepy and unnerving as people say...but I doubt that has anything to do with ghosts, ghouls or demons.

As for the traffic situation, neither of us own a car. I know that people say this is an absolute necessity in LA, but looking at the schedules for the various MTA lines alone, transit seems to be just as good if not better than Portland, which is often lauded for it's public transportation system.

This goes for every city but I believe it especially goes with LA. I believe that its completely mandatory to just randomly explore the city to truly appreciate it. Sure its semi-dense sprawl comes with its downfalls, but it also gives these unique neighborhoods which I absolutely love. Last step is to better connect them with transit

Lots of praise here for San Diego but when I visited I found it to be quite regular. It reminded me of Boston. There was nothing really all that special.

I stayed in La Jolla and found the area to be pretty but homogenous. Also the people in La Jolla were a bit snobby but still not rude.

Boston not really that special? It's anything but regular and a very special, culturally diverse city imho...Although I do agree with you about SD if you're not into fantastic warm, mild climate and surf year round it's kind of boring and La Jolla has a pretentious vibe about it.

This is about the most objectively incorrect statement I've ever read on this board. As somebody who has commuted from Long Beach to many other areas of the region, Long Beach regularly ranks among the LEAST traffic burdened cities. The reason this is so was given by bigdumbgod: it's relative distance to local job centers. That proximity represents the blessing and curse of living here.
