The enormous popularity of the self-destructing-message app Snapchat has helped its developer, Snap Inc., grow to more than 1,500 employees — most of them inside a web of owned and leased properties in Venice:

I'd say the Oakwood section is becoming increasingly upper class.

Still not the safest area, no matter what they do to Venice.

"Gregory Wherry was taken into custody last week and formally charged Monday with the Aug. 3 fatal shooting of Marvin Ponce in the Oakwood section of Venice. He is a member of the Venice Shoreline Crips, a primarily black gang that originated in Oakwood and has held sway in the neighborhood for decades..."

A low class area with upper class prices perhaps ?

I feel kind of bad for the homeowners in Venice that have to put up the homeless craziness and crime .

You can read about it here .

I don't get the attraction of Venice especially at current prices. The boardwalk is a borderline freakshow, homelessness is rampant, and whenever I turn on the news and Venice is mentioned, it's mostly crime related or residents' discontent with Snapchat's presence.

Venice really has gentrified in the past decade and a half since I've been visiting there. I noticed on my most recent visit many of the street performers were gone and many buildings had been renovated.

I would wager to say it will be upper middle class fairly soon..

I don't get it either. Pay top dollar to live in a dirty, overcrowded, druggie and transient infested neighborhood in the city of LA?

My last trip to the boardwalk I was harassed the whole time by transients.

If you HAVE to live the Venice/Abbott Kinney lifestyle, better to live in Mar Vista or Culver City (cheaper) and make the short trek.

I have visitors over who insisted on going to Venice today. I explained how I think it is vastly overrated but they insisted on going. They were disappointed.

Irvin Tabor, an African American from Louisiana, was the chauffeur and confidant of developer Abbot Kinney, an eccentric cigar magnate who founded the community of Venice.

For years, Tabor and his family lived in a cluster of Craftsman-style bungalows he built in the 600 block of Westminster Avenue in the Oakwood section of town:
