Lawndale in Chicago does have some very serious gang problems, and, unlike L.A., some of those hard core gang bangers are white! While non-Latino white gangs in L.A. disappeared when the gang culture got more hardcore in the early '80s, they still are very much a reality in Chicago.

well lawndale is a black neighborhood, lawndale used to be white and it had the gaylords which were a hardcore white street gang, but as the demographics changed and neighborhoods so did the white gangs, gangs like the gayords dont really exist anymore, the white gangs that i will say are in chicago are the simon city royals although mixed and the popes also mixed though

I never even knew there were White gangs. I thought there were just Black gangs and Mexican gangs... And you know, Wiggas and Wexicans.

Actually we have Asian gangs too, but it seems to me that they don't show up in the news as often, and are probably more crime-for-profit oriented rather than territorially oriented. IOW you don't hear in the news about Asian gangs fighting for turf.

I'm a third generation L.A native (Rare). My grandmap was born in Los Angeles in 1920 and she told me that it has always had a problem with violence yet, you ussually have to go looking for it. If youre minding your own buisness nobody messes with you.

You need to research Long Beach. I've lived in Encino, Canoga Park, Beverly Hills, Palmdale and currently Long Beach. Long Beach is really nice by the coast. I am inbetween the Pike and Belmont Shores (a really nice part of Long Beach) Even by PolyTech H.S. (Snoop's old school) it isn't THAT bad. The only time i'm scared in L.A is when i'm near McArthur Park, day or night.

L.A is an extremely diverse area. I was raised in Canoga Park and you would think, being white, you would not get caught up in the black vs. hispanic hatred...WRONG. I was asked at 4 to chose a side. So, I thought I was black until I was 7 =P That was a hard day. Later in life I would go visit my great grandma who lived in Watts all of her life (since 1920). During the Watts riots many of her neighbors went to her trailor to protect her. I visited friends' African American families during their family reunions and was told I had to duck my head because we were going through really bad parts of South Central and... I was white. What I found surprising was one day the train I took from L.A to Long Beach had some emergency and they made us evacuate at night in the middle of Compton. These really nice African American guys offered to walk me and the only other white chick on the train to the bus station and wait with us. Yep, they were gang members, yep they were packing and yep they were extremely nice and helpful. Basically what I have learned is that if you have no problems with gang members and they have no problems with you, you are fine. They rarely randomly attack. P.S. Yep, at first I was really really scared and figured, this is it.

My neighborhood has been good for a while but last couple of nights we had some guys drive through our street from a rival gang yell out their name and drive off. It's been quiet for a while here until the past couple of weeks. Last night we heard a few pops.

North Atwater Villiage.

McArthur Park? Are you serious? I'm in McArthur Park all the time. Seems pretty safe to me.

I've only been to McArthur park once, and I didn't feel in danger at all. There are just so many people walking around that it is next to impossible for something to happen to you - if something did there are like 100,000 people milling around so someone would help you. Just because they don't look like you doesn't make them dangerous.

Didn't work for Kitty Genovese.

Some people don't want to get involved because they believe it's none of their business. Maybe the man fighting with a woman is a domestic dispute. Some people are scared to get involved.

I think of gang members simply as feral humans...
