Can it be done? 150 miles round trip.
Please list reasons for and against.
If against, suggest good areas to live in Palmdale or Lancaster!

Valuing your sanity is a good reason against doing that commute

Depending where you are in Santa Clarita and where you're going on base, it would be closer to at least 90 minutes one way, if not more.

I always advise people to check out the west sides of both Palmdale and Lancaster if they're interested in the area.

Let's say you don't live directly on the freeway. You are probably a few redlights and/or stop signs from the freeway. Let's give that 10 minutes. Now you are on the 14 and head north. You got on at Golden Valley. You drive north through Acton and reach the Antelope Valley area at around Ave. S. That was 28 miles, if you average 75MPH then that was 22 minutes. Watch the signs count up, Ave S,M,L,K all the way to A (each letter is a mile), then another 3 miles to get to Rosamond Blvd. That was another 22 miles and another 18 minutes. Rosamond has 3 lights if I remember correctly and then you are heading to what looks like nowhere until you see the EAFB sign, then more nothing for about 10 miles (they are quite strict on speeding on the base) until you reach the guard shack. Then more miles to get to the base proper. Depending on where you work along the flightline, that can be quite a few more miles, but let's cut it at 16 from the Rosamond exit, and 20 minutes. Total in this example is 70 minutes and that is not messing around. The 14 is patrolled by all kinds of vehicles. Unmarked white car, regular cars, bikes. They know the good spots and move around. They mainly use Ka band.

70 minutes doesn't sound ... too bad when you think about those that commute from O.C. to Los Angeles (although my previous/current job was a blissfully 5 miles).

Although my car is relative new (24,000 miles in 3 years), my main concern would be the mileage accumulated in a year (150 miles/day x 5 days/week x 52 weeks/year) ~ 40,000 miles.

...but, if I left SC everyday at 6am, I could make it into work at 7:30am!
(really don't want to live in Lancaster if I don't have to...)

If you decide on Santa Clarita, better get a place close to the freeway. It can take FOREVER to get across that town.

I remember watching a show where it was extreme commutes of 4 hours each way haha. Seriously though, SCV quality of life is head and shoulders above AV, which has turned into a real hole. The drive on the 14 is not that bad as it is against traffic. You should be able to cruise 75 without much trouble. If you bump it up to 85, you better be on your toes. The road however, is a mess. Potholes, rough pavement, illegals going 85 in a minivan with two spare tires, etc. My neighbor thought I was exaggerating until he saw it for himself. Every mile or so are skid marks and guardrails punched through.

Thanks! I'll go for a test drive (6am from SC to Edwards). The big disadvantage will be the miles on my car, but I think time will be fine (maybe a Language CD? =P).
Also, 60 miles / (75 miles per hour) = 0.8 hours = 48 minutes
60 miles / (85 miles per hour) = 0.7 hours = 42 minutes
6 minutes isn't worth a traffic ticket!!
