Didn't you do any research before you moved? When I moved to LA, I did as much research as I could which was hard because this was back in the late 1970s. Did you rent the apartment before you moved out there? If not, you should have driven around the area to check it out.

It is hard to get just about any job in the entertainment business. A lot of it is not what you know but who you know.

I agree with you Sam, don't listen to the naysayers. However, here's the deal. If the naysayers have a big enough impact on you to change your mind about trying to make it here, then you'll never make it here.

Making it anywhere, especially when you don't have a "normal" job or career, is incredibly difficult. It typically takes years and years of very hard, dedicated work to become an overnight success. And statistically, few make it.

As long as people know their odds and are willing to fight against those odds with all they have, then more power to them. But there aren't many people like that, who are willing to give up everything they have, including a "normal" life, to chase a dream.

I do want to add that no one should change your mind about your dreams except yourself. And making it means different things to different people. For some just being able to do their craft is enough, while others want the fame and fortune. For me it was just being a working actor. Unfortunately, I lost sight of my dream and I moved away for a bit. I want to come back and give it another try. Will I be a star? I doubt it BUT I will be happy because I am doing what I have always dreamed of doing.

If all you do are small gigs well you are doing a lot more than people who just sit at home dreaming of doing something like that. I have encountered so many people who say they want to be a performer but when pushed they only are interested in being stars. Stars come and go but true artists are forever. Keep pushing and you will get to where you want to go.
