At that price on the West Side, you not find your own apartment and will have to share a place. Check the usual places for people advertising for roommates, like Craigslist.

Venice, West LA, and Westwood, are also nearby. Check those neighborhoods.

Failing that, try Palms, Mid-Wilshire, Mid-City, or Koreatown.

These apartments are not in a nice neighborhood, and I couldn't recommend anything in that price range, because that is not enough money to live in a place of your own in a decent neighborhood here. If you cannot pay at least $1000 per month for a studio in a better location, you will be living in a dump. I suggest you contact your school's housing office for assistance; perhaps they can help you find other students who need roommates, or a room to rent in someone's home. I hear that the recession if forcing many homeowners to take in boarders, so you might find some joy in the latter option.

Definately will have to share in that area. Santa Monica and West L.A. are some of the most expensive areas in all of Los Angeles for renting.. (and real estate!)
