Orchid Hotel is a relatively new hotel that opened up in Downtown LA near the subway station and close by to LA Live and the rest of the many, many bars, restaurants, clubs and lounges in Downtown LA.

O Hotel

The hotel is right across the street from Ralphs Fresh Fare (an upscale supermarket), 24-hour IHOP and 24-hour Subway sandwich store, Panini Cafe, and two blocks from LA Live.

Some pics of it:

And it's two blocks from LA Live:

I think it's $139 a night for the single room.

Be sure to come back and post a trip report. They're always useful for folks who come to the forum seeking advice such as yours.

If you happen to be on the Westside Saturday or Sunday I'd take jaunt up to UCLA for the LA Times Festival of Books. It's pretty massive. You can check the website for the author appearances list, but tickets/reservations to those panel discussions go fast, from creative writing and fiction talk to current events/non-fiction. It's all totally free, though, just the parking is charged if you're not busing it. (Tote in your own water and picnic lunch, though, coz $$$$ otherwise.)

There's a panel discussion on Saturday called "Unknown Los Angeles" that might interest you, and with thousands upon thousands of people milling about (all readers) you might get some other itinerary ideas.

Oh, right, you're in Redondo. Sorry about the cloud cover, man. It'll be cloudy to partly cloudy all through the weekend, I think. But visibility should be excellent from vista points. I take it then that you went to Hennessy's for a beer on the pier? Wish it were hot for you. That particular area isn't particularly a dining or chow destination, but the ambience makes up for it. El Gringo in Hermosa has a rooftop with a view. Adequate Mexican, nothing spectacular (and maybe priced 25% more than its value). But a local joint, and mellow. Very mellow. Gee, I'm almost feeling a margarita buzz thinking about it. May the clouds part to greet you.
