In reply to the original question, that feeling comes and goes for me. Coming here at 8 years old it definitely felt magical but I got used to it. Being out on my own for the first time throughout my 20s and living downtown it was magical once again and it went away when I got attacked twice in that neighborhood.
Having recently bought a home in a good, safe neighborhood it feels magical once again. See? Comes and goes.

This may be the best response yet. "Magical" is so subjective. Our needs and desires vary not only from one individual to the next, but also vary in our own lives as our priorities change.
Focus on what makes you feel good inside. Whenever you depend on external forces to make you happy, you're bound to be disappointed as soon as the novelty of it begins to wear off. Happiness comes from within, not from without.

How about Cabo or Mazatlan? It sounds like magical is less Hollywood for you and more palm trees and fresh air that you can afford.

There is no question that the magic exists for me. I have been to dozens of US cities and never felt it anywhere else. I am old enough to know that a vacation is not reality and palm trees don't pay the bills, but I just wanted to see if anyone else out there has felt that magic. Thankfully, many know what I am talking about.

I'm originally from L.A. and over the years have lived in San Francisco, New York, Miami, and even South Carolina. I've visited Europe and most of Latin America. In my opinion, L.A. is magical. It has its drawbacks like any other place... but at certain moments, whether at sunrise or sunset, it is undeniably magical.

Okay, I'll give in: When landing at LAX at night, the city lights seem to go on forever. It's pretty amazing. Some might call it magical.
I have to think hard to come up with aspects of L.A. that I would call "magical".

Thank you everyone for chiming in.
I already know the $$$, the traffic, and the smog are the worst parts.
So what are the good things about it, coming from people who live there?

Sorry, just because a lot of people live in LA doesn't make it superior. Mexico City is 6-7X larger in population than Los Angeles. I guess Mexico City is beyond magical, isn't it? Mexico City has lot's of palm trees and billboards too, by the way...
Most travelers don't see LA as "magical" in fact, it is always ranked at the bottom of the favorites. It's great you love Los Angeles, but you need to understand that it is not regarded as magical at all.

Good point. I guess Tehran, Iran, would also qualify as magical (urban population: about 13 million). They have palm trees there too.
