Default Which beach is better Hermosa/Redondo or Huntington/Newport?

Hey everyone me and my friends are moving out to the beach in Southern California. We are all males in our 20's and have visited Hermosa and Huntington beach several times but would like some more opinions.

Our goal is to have fun, enjoy life, make some memories and hang out with pretty ladys and have a great summer on the beach in Socal.

We would also like to try out for movies etc but thats one of our lower priorities (once a week) so commuting is not a big issue.

What are you opinions on Hermosa/Redondo vs. Huntington/Newport?Which one would you recommend? How are different?

Not so sure but think myself if young and want to be around a larger area for your age than hermosa or redondo would be good or any place in the same county than huntington or newport thats pretty much if you prefer younger crowd or a place that fits your age imo.

Hermosa or Redondo by a long shot. Huntington is okay, but there's better options. Newport... Newport Beach sucks. I can't stress that point enough.

Why does it suck? Is it too conservative and full of retirees?

from my experiences they are very similar. Newport is very similar to Manhattan Beach and Hermose and Huntington are also very similar. Lot's of money in both areas and lots of young people living the socal beach lifestyle.

I'm surprised to read vegaspilgrim's comment on Newport Beach [I thought you liked places like Mission Viejo?]. Actually I would have picked Newport because of the natural beauty + Newport Bay is a great place for little kids to learn how to swim in the ocean. Huntington has the surf culture & great surfing contests are held there [where I often swam as a kid]. Hermosa is sort of the step-sister between flashier Manhattan & Redondo. You could once get an $500 a mo studio apt near the beach in Hermosa.

I was actually in Newport Beach last weekend. The architecture there is so drab it hurts, it feels more like the east coast than the west coast. Trying to find a parking space anywhere around there is a nightmare-- worse than any other beach community I've seen. I saw a movie at the Via Lido Regency theater, and every single person in the theater was over 50, and most over 60 years old. Talk about feeling out of place. Balboa itself has some young people but I just don't get the attraction. "Un fun" is how I'd describe it. I like the Newport Coast master planned development in south Newport Beach, I'm sure that would be nice if you had the several $ million it takes to live there. Just the level of pretention in general around Newport Beach is nauseating. It's the exact opposite of the "laid back" stereotype California is supposedly known for. Pretty much any other beach community in OC is better-- Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach (feels kind of "manufactured" but there are a number of fun bars at least on the Main St strip. HB is good, it just feels like it would get very old after a while), even Seal Beach. I also hate Manhattan Beach for similar reasons. I'd rate Hermosa/Redondo as the best beach community in LA, but for the OP if he is moving to SoCal specifically for the beach and fun in the sun I'd recommend San Diego over even the "South Bay."

btw happ, places like Mission Viejo feel like completely different universes than Newport Beach to me. MV is just a normal, middle class suburban community, kind of reminds me of where I grew up, may be boring, but it doesn't reek of "pretentiousness."

I think Hermosa Beach is a perfect fit for you. Definately has the best party atmosphere of the four, and is the closest to the studios if you do wind up in entertainment.

Hermosa by far..Redondo is OK Newport is alright and Huntington is pretty good and always tons of people and stuff to get into but Hermosa sounds perfect for you.

I went to school in Irvine and then grad school at UCLA. I've spent a lot of time at the beach and I think that Hermosa and Redondo are great beach areas for a group of guys your age who are looking to have a lot of fun. Huntington Beach is great too but I wouldn't recommend Newport Beach for what you're looking for.

Redondo and Hermosa definitely seem like they would be the best fit for what you're looking for.
