Far too many.
Ok, first off, who cares 'what gangs are active' ?
Second , just to let you know... "Mexican Mafia" wouldn't be active in the streets of Los Angeles...or anywhere for that matter. It's a prison gang, not a street gang. For example; one guy from Florencia and one guy from Echo Park go to prison, they both represent "Mexican Mafia". On the streets they're still Echo Park, etc. Piru Bloods? Thats like typing Bloods Bloods. Same thing with 'Black P Stones' ...prison. How to see which ones are active... how about if you're that interested, drive around Pico Union Downtown and Boyle Heights East LA and walk around, see whose patrolling. Who cares? They wont bother you if you stay out of trouble

Not really... when the gangs are on the streets they fight each other , when theyre in the pen they all rep. Mex Mafia. and all the latino gangs, mexican or not, all latino gangs tag up 13 after their set for example, ms-13 isnt mexican but they do that out of respect for the eme so when in prison its all eme

and yeah everyone thinks LA is so tough and crazy cause of what they show on tv. i know some neighborhoods in the city of san diego just outside of downtown that are alot more dangerous that neighborhoods in south central and all that hype.

LA is nothing compared to Philadelphia

Memphis, Miami, Las Vegas, Detroit, Washington DC, New Orleans, St Louis, San Diego, Phoenix, Cleveland, etc.

people think miami and san diego are super nice and rich, and of course they have their rich areas just like la has compton and beverly hills.

san diego is a border city with TJ ... TJ is 10x crazier than any US city and alot of that poors into the streets of san diego. lots of drugs and weapons get smuggled in to san diego, and everything hits san diego before la and sf.

In this age of technical marvels, trips to the moon, computers with insanely large capacities, civil rights, communications; I just don't understand why this modern society even tolerates gangs. What is it, votes?

I have wondered that myself. I understand they started as a sort of neighborhood watch program, which is fine, but once they became domestic terrorists, why didn't the communities step in?

My wife and I are moving to LA next year, and being two scrawny 22 y/o white people from the midwest, we get a lot of "Don't get shot!" and "Watch out for the gangs" advice. We've never had a problem in LA, and we've been in the St. Louis area our entire lives and have never had a problem with it. People around here don't really consider StL unsafe, but are scared to death of LA. I'm blaming the media.

I think the continuation of the gang culture is caused by the situations kids are brought up in these areas, and the glorification of it in movies, music, and television. Many of these kids are told they will never amount to anything because they're from X or are Y color, so they take the easy road, sell drugs, and die by the age of 30. It's sad, really.

Glorification in movies, music, and television?

The real thing was pretty prominent long before gangsta rap and Menace II Society. The kids don't need to see it on a TV in their living room, they can see it on the streets in front of their house.
