Wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the photography forum. Just experimenting with my camera and trying to capture the essence of this small town within a big city.

I know the area well, and you nailed it. Nice shots. So Pas is a nice little town.

So quaint and full of charm. Next time you should try their Thursday Farmer's Market. Its pretty much the prototypical, quintessential community-run Farmer's Market, and will not disappoint.

I second the Farmer's Market suggestion. It's great. Check out Garfield Park, too. I love the photos, but a lot of them emphasize some of the more suburban elements of the city (the Vons development and that El Pollo Loco mall are among my least favorite parts of town, despite having useful businesses located there). Still, thanks for posting. I love South Pas.

I realize my comments about the photos emphasizing the suburban elements of town might be seen as critical - I don't mean it that way, and only want to encourage you to come back and take more photos to share! You could add the flocks of parrots to the list of things to photograph; you see them all over town, but it seems like there's always a lot of them in the trees next to Trader Joes's.

Keep in mind, as I said in the OP, this wasn't really meant to be a comprehensive photo tour of South Pasadena. It was more an experimentation with night time photography. This was not planned. I just wanted to get out of my dingy apartment and go somewhere in less than a 20 minute drive where I could get something to eat and walk around without worrying about getting mugged-- and South Pasadena happens to be a convenient spot for me to do that. I was actually thinking about putting this in the photography forum. I was debating whether or not share these photos online at all. I would have to go back during the daytime (and maybe I will) to really get quality pictures that show what the historic character is all about. I attempted to take pictures of a few houses but quickly found out the street lighting is just plain is not adequate at night for my pictures to come out. Not to mention that I don't want to look creepy taking pictures of people's private residences at night.

VegasPilgram: Great shots - - are you trying out a new camera? Or just the night shots? And I think the Farmers Market would be a fun place to take photo's. I have seen the Little Italy Mercado on the San Diego forum and I think it is fun to see the outdoor thing (especially here in Minnesota where our weather is just starting to get nice enough to go outside).

UptownUrbanist: Tell me more about the parrots - do you know what kind? I have followed the wild parrots of telegraph hill for years. I have parrots myself so love to hear about the wild flocks tht have managed to survive and do well.

Been through So. Pas. many times, can't understand why everyone makes such a big deal over it. I do like their 24/7 post office.

It's very safe and has a nice small-town feel to it but it's very close to the city. Not many other places in LA county where you can find that.
