Default San Gabriel Mountains photos

This was from several months ago... before it started raining/snowing a lot... a trip up to the San Gabriel Mountains, up Angeles Crest Hwy/ 2. Depending on the traffic, the base of this road starting at La Canada Flintridge is only about 25-35 minutes from downtown LA. The farthest I went on this trip is no more than 30 minutes up the road. Amazing how close this is to the city, but a whole different world. Unfortunately most of the time the smog backs right up to these mountains and you can even smell the smog... pretty bad, which ruins the experience. But on a nice clear day it's a great place to be:

The San Gabriel Mountains make the Santa Monica Mountains look like little hills! Thanks for sharing Having moved here from a very flat part of the country I never cease to be amazed by the topography here.

Nice pictures thanks for posting them. It looks like a typical day in LA you can't see the city through all the smog.

Great shots once again Vegas; the flora in that region is amazing..One of the big draws for me to So. Cal is the varied climate zones..From my favorite coastal chaparral/mediterranean--to the San Gabriel Mts. with it's desert alpine backdrops..I always love checking out your Colorado/California photo essays..

As usual, great pics, vegas...thx

Amazing how many great driving roads are within 30 mins of where so many millions live/work in LA or SF....and with CA's near-ideal, yr-round weather, can quickly escape for a great drive many wkend AMs on empty twisties...stuff not available at any price in most of world's cities yr-round (or any time of yr in flat places like Chic/Dallas/FL, etc)...and much of why car nuts can never leave LA or SF
