Default Headed to LA..but where?

Hi everyone,
Two of my friends and I are planning a road trip to Los Angeles this summer. We are from the Midwest and this will be new territory for all of us. One of the girls is in Marketing, and is on the hunt for a job, while myself and the other girl are there to enjoy and see if this is a place we could see ourselves calling home. Does anyone have any tips on good hotels to stay in that are accessible to the fun (and safe) parts of the city? We're ready to experience the best Los Angeles has to offer- thanks!!

Depends on what your budget is and what you're interested in. It's a huge city with lots of options. I'd consider staying in Hollywood; it's an interesting area, conveniently located, has both touristy things as well as is a real (and interesting) neighborbood, and has a lot of affordable hotels. The Motel 6 on Whitley is a GREAT location, and the price is usually pretty affordable; while it's certainly not upscale, my relatives used to stay there when visiting (we lived up the block) and found it mildly sketchy at times but overall clean and safe. It's one block off of Hollywood Boulevard, and within walking distance of both the Hollywood and Vine and the Hollywood and Highland intersections and metro stops, not to mention all of the stuff in between on Hollywood Boulevard.
