A public street is public property so anyone can park there regardless of who owns the property adjacent to it. Let your neighbor know that if he persists with his illegal behavior, he'll get a visit from the police. But he does sound like a jerk, so even if he complies, you need to be aware that he may take some retaliatory measures.

I can understand where you are coming from, but blocking up spaces is still a d*** move. I'm sure that you wouldn't be too happy if someone else picked up the same tactic and was constantly blocking spaces for his own use.

They're probably from the east coast. Here in Boston, people "save" their spots using trash cans & lawn chairs. Mostly because they feel if they've dug their car out of the snow, they're entitled to it.

One time I parked in "someone's spot" who had used MY MOM'S trash cans to block it off. I got a nasty note on my car telling me to replace the cans when I left the spot. (and it wasn't my mom, heh)

People are a-holes when it comes to parking. Actually, they're a-holes when it comes to anything to do with a car.

Technically, I think most cities have the rule where you can only leave thrash cans out the evening before and must return them by the morning after the pickup, but I'm sure its the least of a city's worries.

I drove through highland park for the first time this week; they actually put their thrash cans in the middle of the street so that they can continue to use the curb to park -- I've driven through the past few days and the thrashcans are always out there, so I know they aren't getting ticketed.

I'm always amazed by people who proudly declare that they're jerks and then rationalize it.

People do that in Philly too and in that case I don't really have an issue with it since you did put effort into clearing out that spot.

Not a whole lot of snow shoveling happening around here guys. Wouldn't know what that is like. You can find me at the beach every month of the year. Even when we are having a hard winter, you know when the weather dipps down into the 50's. Althought the occasional shower is nice. Helps to wash the sand back out to the beach. LOL

I've heard that they now do it when there's no snow, too, though. Haven't really seen it, but I haven't really looked, either.

Yes, Pittsburghers do it when there's no snow too. For instance, a local Greek food festival, in a tight neighborhood with little parking, the residents put out the chairs so they have a space for them.

An excerpt:
"Some places, including Pittsburgh, do not place legal sanctions against those engaging in the practice, but make clear that anyone has the right to claim an informal space that was reserved by someone else for their own vehicle, regardless of courtesy. However, it is a general practice around the city to respect the markers of others."
