I am a college student with 1 more year left of undergraduate studies. I want to move to the L.A. area, because i simply fell in love with it when i visited.
What colleges/universities are there that are in Los Angeles, or within 15 minutes commuting?
At the time, i am looking to spend up to $16,000 for out-of-state tuition.
Also, can anyone give me an estimate ofhow much i would be looking to spend on rent for a 1bed/1bath apartment/studio within 20 minutes of Los Angeles? (in a relatively safe area)
Keep in mind that 20 minutes from Los Angeles could still put you within hours of an LA-based school. There are no easy answers to your rent question, either. Find your school first and then investigate neighborhoods, as you'll want to live near, or at least within reasonable commuting distance, from your school. LA is massive, even bigger if you count "LA area", and the traffic makes even many short distances unpleasant. To get you started try googling los angeles colleges and see what comes up - there are a lot. Even more if you count Orange County or Inland Empire. Some have highly competitive admissions, others less so. There are going to be a lot of variables beyond just cost.
You'll want to be careful about transfers, too. With only one year left at your current school you may be better off finishing up there, rather than transferring and potentially delaying graduation because either your credits don't all transfer or because your coursework doesn't match up with the school's requirements. You might be better off waiting and trying to find a job here post-graduation. (especially considering that it's already April and I'm assuming many colleges have already filled their spots for next year, transfer or otherwise, although maybe I'm wrong).
Well, there is UCLA, of course. You'll have to research their website to see whether they offer biotechnology.
Then there are the Cal State schools: Cal State LA, Cal State Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Northridge... I'm sure I'm leaving some out.
Then there is private school USC - the University of Southern California. Also Cal Tech, in Pasadena. Again, check the websites to see whether they offer your major.
Finally, check out the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, CA. It's an eastern suburb of LA - the colleges are excellent, and there are 7 of them, I think.

UCLA's non-resident off-campus apartment yearly tuition is $44,311. I think you could expect to pay at least $1,200 per month for a 1 bedroom around the UCLA campus.
