I'm glad to hear the the UCLA surrounding area is safe...How about Santa Monica? I know that's close, but not in the nearby vicinity...
I'm not worried as much as a lot of people, notice that when you are alert and carry yourself you are less of a vicitim, keep your head up, look around you, don't look out of it, as you said, these are all big-city things, even in Honolulu you sometimes have to watch your back! And in Key West, they had bad areas too...sad for such a small island, but true.
1. Look around, but not paranoid
2. Be alert, don't be in a daze
3. Eyes and head up
4. Walk with promise, not slow, unsteady
5. Don't be wasted with dollar bills sticking out of your pocket
6. Always lock your car in a big city...(duh, right)
7. If you're out late, stay in popluated, lit areas.
Sometimes you're going to be the victim no matter what...but from what I've seen, and learned from training (forced, induced training) in the service, you'll lower your chances. If that doesn't work, go in groups...don't for me though, been alone most new places thus far.
I agree with previous posters' comments about common sense. Don't be a target...
